Stud poker is poker without a board. Every card you hold was dealt to you alone, some face down and some face up, so you read opponents from what they show rather than from shared cards. This page walks through how seven-card and five-card stud are dealt and where both part ways with Hold’em.

How stud poker is dealt, street by street

Each round of dealing is called a street, and a betting round follows it. The two main versions differ in how many cards you receive.

Opening deal2 face down, 1 face up1 face down, 1 face up
Next up cardsOne face up on each of the next three streetsOne face up on each of the next three streets
Last card1 face down (seventh street)None; the fifth card is dealt face up

A hand of seven-card stud ends with each player holding three face-down and four face-up cards. A hand of five-card stud ends with one hidden card and four showing, which makes it the quicker game to read.

Who acts first in stud poker

The first round is opened by a forced bet. The player showing the lowest up card posts a small bring-in, with suits breaking ties in some rooms. After that, the player whose up cards make the best hand speaks first, so a visible pair acts before an unmatched board.

The reasoning is plain: with no button moving around the table, the cards themselves decide who has position. A player whose face-up cards are strong gets pressure on early, and a player with weak showing cards is the one who pays for the first bet.

Stud poker versus Hold’em

The two games reward different reading skills. This table sets them side by side.

Because seven players use 49 of the 52 cards in a seven-card game, a full table is the practical limit; an eighth player would need a shared last card, which is a community-card trick borrowed from Hold’em.

House-banked stud games against the dealer

Not every stud-style table pits you against other players. A Caribbean-stud-type game deals you five cards and the dealer five with one showing; you ante, look at your hand, then fold or raise at twice the ante, and the dealer usually needs ace-king or better to qualify. The paytable and any jackpot add-on belong to the table, so read them in the game’s own window rather than from memory.

A ₱100 ante, as a round-number example, becomes ₱300 in total once you raise at twice the ante.

If you prefer a faster comparison with simpler decisions, the three card poker rules explained step by step cover a three-card version where the only choice is to play or fold.

Counting stud hands

A five-card hand can be chosen from 52 cards in 2,598,960 ways (52 times 51 times 50 times 49 times 48 divided by 120). Seven cards contain 21 different five-card subsets, since 7 choose 5 equals 21, which is why a seven-card stud player has many more chances at a made hand than a five-card one. A royal flush, for example, is four hands out of 2,598,960, or one in 649,740 on a plain five-card deal.

FAQ

Hold'em shares five community cards between all players. Stud shares nothing: every card belongs to one player, and some of them are face up for everyone to see.

How many cards does seven-card stud use for the final hand?

Each player is dealt seven cards and makes the best five-card hand from them. The other two cards are ignored.

Who bets first in stud poker?

On the first round the player showing the lowest up card posts the bring-in. On later rounds the player whose up cards make the best poker hand acts first.
