A blackjack split is the move that lets you break a starting pair into two separate hands, each with its own bet equal to the first. Do it with the right pair and you turn one weak total into two decent starts. Do it with the wrong pair and you pay double for a worse hand. This page lists which pairs earn a split, which never do, and which table rules shift the answer.

When a blackjack split helps you

A split pays off when the two hands you create start stronger than the one hand you had. That is the whole test. Here is the usual basic-strategy pattern for a starting pair, assuming the dealer stands on all 17s and doubling after a split is allowed.

PairUsual moveReason
AcesAlways splitOne hand is a soft 12; two hands start on 11
8sAlways splitA hard 16 is the worst total; two 8s are far better
9sSplit against 2 to 6, 8 and 9; stand against 7, 10 and ace18 already beats a dealer 7
7sSplit against 2 to 7Dealer weak or middling; otherwise 14 is poor
6sSplit against 3 to 6 (and 2 where doubling after a split is allowed)A dealer 2 to 6 busts often
2s and 3sSplit against 4 to 7 (2 to 7 where doubling after a split is allowed)Small pairs need a weak dealer
4sTreat as a hard 8 and hitSplitting gives two weak hands
5sNever split; treat as a 10 and double10 is a strong doubling hand
10sNever split20 is already a made hand

A basic-strategy chart is the standard way to check these; a different rule set at your table can shift a borderline pair, so the rules window of the table is the final word.

Pairs you never split in blackjack

Two pairs break the logic of splitting. Tens give you a total of 20, which wins against any dealer total except 21. Fives give you a 10, which is a prime hand to double on, and splitting would trade it for two hands starting on 5.

Problem

You split a pair of tens because two chances to make 20 feel better than one 20.

Fix

Stand on the 20. A second hand starting on 10 has to hit a good card to reach even 20, and you have paid a full second bet to try.

Problem

You stand on a pair of eights because 16 looks close to 21.

Fix

Split them. A hard 16 loses to most dealer hands, and each 8 on its own can grow into 18 or 19 with a decent next card.

The odds behind splitting aces and eights

Some of this is plain arithmetic from a standard 52-card deck. Sixteen of the 52 cards are worth ten (four tens, four jacks, four queens, four kings), so the chance that a card landing on a split ace is worth ten is 16 out of 52, about 30.8 percent. Each ace therefore has roughly a one in three chance of becoming 21 on the second card, though many tables pay a split 21 at even money rather than 3 to 2.

A pair as your first two cards turns up on 78 of the 1,326 possible two-card starts (13 ranks, 6 ways each), about 5.9 percent of hands or one in 17. That is why you will meet this decision often enough to learn it.

What table rules change about a split

Rules differ by table and by studio, and each one moves the split chart a little. Open the game’s rules window to read the ones that apply.

RuleWhat it changesWhat to look for
Doubling after a splitMakes small pairs like 2s, 3s and 6s more worth splittingWhether double is allowed on split hands
Resplitting acesLets a second ace on a split ace become a third handAllowed or not
One card only on split acesRemoves the chance to hit a split aceA split ace gets exactly one card
Split 21 payoutA 21 on a split hand may pay 1 to 1, not 3 to 2Written payout line
Pair definitionKing and queen split at some tables, not othersSame rank or same value
Resplit limitCaps how many hands you can buildMaximum hands per round

Each of these shifts the house edge. For the plain-words definition, see the house edge meaning before you compare tables.

Finding a blackjack table and reading its rules

Open Live or Poker from the YG777 menu and look for the blackjack table you want. Live lists 14 studios and Poker lists 7. Run through this checklist before your first bet.

  1. Open the table’s rules window, which sits in each game’s own window.
  2. Find the split line and note whether doubling after a split is allowed.
  3. Check how a 21 on a split hand is paid.
  4. Place your bet only when all three are clear.

Two other card tables use the same decision-after-the-cards rhythm. Stud poker has no shared cards, and the three card poker rules for the ante show a game where the choice is simply play or fold.

FAQ

Should I always split eights in blackjack?

Yes. A pair of eights is a hard 16, the weakest total you can hold, and two hands starting on 8 are better than one hand stuck on 16.

Why never split tens?

Two tens give you 20, which already beats almost everything. Splitting breaks a strong hand into two weaker starts that each need a good card.

Can I split a king and a queen?

At many tables you can, because both count as ten, but some tables only allow identical ranks. The rules window of the table you open says which applies.

Anong table rules ang nagbabago sa split?

Doubling after a split, resplitting aces, one card only on split aces, and how a 21 on a split hand is paid. Basahin ang rules ng mesa bago ka maglagay ng taya.
